The different genera are described systematically, their appearance, time and geographical extent. Some were small and some, like the iconic Smilodon fatalis ("deadly knife-like tooth"), were considerably larger than a modern lion. We know of at least one pre-mammal species, 250 million years old, but the others come from different branches of the mammal tree. The reviewer never realised that so many different and unrelated sabertooth animals existed. The average reader will learn a lot from the ample text accompanying the illustrations. Especially the reconstructions are held in warm and pleasing colours. All are high-quality drawings of skeleton parts, anatomical details and full reconstructions of the animals and the scenery around. Rarely do you see books with such exquisite and to-the-point illustrations. The first impression of this book is its visual beauty.
